Cusco & Machu Picchu - The Inca KingdomThis price includes:
Description: Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, with paths leading to the important Inca fortresses and cities, through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Machu Picchu stands on a mountain top, overlooking the tumbling Urubamba River, as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It is shrouded in myth and mystery. We can arrange any other travel arrangements in Peru or South America to complement this tour. Itinerary Day 1, ARRIVE CUSCO Arrive into Cusco, capital of the Inca Empire. This afternoon relax and acclimatise perhaps with a stroll around the cobble-stoned streets. Day 2, CUSCO (Breakfast) Morning at leisure. This afternoon enjoy a city tour, which includes the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, and the Koricancha Temple. Just outside Cusco, visit the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, the small fortress of Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay, a sacred bathing place. Day 3, CUSCO - SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS (Breakfast & Lunch) A full day tour into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, including a visit to Pisac and its colourful Indian market – a not-to-be-missed opportunity to purchase Peruvian weavings and pottery. After a sumptuous lunch, continue along the Urubamba Valley to the ruins of Ollantaitambo, an impressive Inca fortress. Spend the night at a charming inn in the Sacred Valley. Note: Your itinerary can be amended to fit in with market days at Pisac - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. If you prefer to stay in Cusco instead of the Sacred Valley, this too can be arranged. Day 4, SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS - MACHU PICCHU (Breakfast & Lunch) Transfer to Ollanta station to board your train bound for Aguas Calientes and take the shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu. A guided tour of the ruins, will have you wondering about the lives of the priests, craftsmen, and servants who inhabited this citadel and what drove them to build it on a mountain top. Excavations have revealed skeletons, artefacts and woollen clothing, but no gold. The same precise stonework as in other Incan sites in evident. The incas left no written record, so the construction and destruction of Machu Picchu remains a mystery. Time at leisure to wander the ruins. This afternoon take the shuttle bus back down to Aguas Calientes and your lodge. Day 5, MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO (Breakfast) We suggest you rise early and return to the ruins which are usually shrouded in clouds before sunrise. Perhaps climb to the summit of Huayna Picchu or up to the Sun Gate for panoramic views. Entrance to the ruins on this day not included. This afternoon take the train to Cusco. Bus and entrance fee on 2nd day is not included. Day 6, DEPART CUSCO (Breakfast) Depart Cusco today. Perhaps continue across the Altiplano to Puno, Lake Titicaca and Bolivia or into the jungle at Puerto Maldonado, or on to the white city of Arequipa. *Conditions: Prices are per person, based on twin share.
